Strolling along Santa Teresa's cobblestone streets, you'll be enchanted by sidewalk mosaics, palatial mansions and artsy galleries. Conveniently situated just southwest of Lapa, this neighborhood offers traditional Brazilian restaurants, bars and craft stores. Despite the neighborhood's low-key, laid-back vibe, Santa Teresa comes alive during Carnival with lively street parties known as blocos, where locals and visitors get dressed up in as much colors and glitter as possible. It's also known for its vibrant music scene with live samba performances every weekend in cultural venues. Travelers say the beautiful neighborhood is a treasure trove for stumbling across quirky art galleries and delicious food. It's generally safe to walk around Santa Teresa, especially the roads lined with bars, restaurants, and shops. However, take care of your belongings at night, especially on empty roads. One of the most famous parts of Santa Teresa, the bonde, or tram, is an iconic trip. It runs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tram circulates every 20 minutes. Tickets cost 20 reais (approximately $4), which includes the trip up and back down. Please note that the tram is not wheelchair accessible.
