Cul de canard or CDC feathers are naturally buoyant and have a delicate, intricate structure that makes them great to use as wings one dry flies and emergers. They give both a lifelike appearance and aid in floatation, and they're easy to tie in and work with. CDC can also be a great material for wet flies and nymph legs, and can even be wound on as a dry-fly body. These are selected grade feathers.

Rene Harrop developed the CDC Para Spinner to enhance the visibility of the traditional spent-wing pattern. To mimic the flat spinner wing of falling mayflies, Harrop trims a V in the forward fibers of the grizzly hackle wrapped around the post. This parachute fly design allows for a flat profile and the biot body sells the segmentation of the natural mayfly.
